Student moves near NDSU and MSUM, West Fargo apartment swaps, and Horace or Dilworth house moves all have one thing in common: cardboard. Buying every box brand-new is optional. Around Fargo–Moorhead, neighbors and retailers give away usable cartons constantly — especially late spring and August when leases turn over.
We're Dakota Moving and Junk. Owner Gama and the crew pack trucks through every season up here. This guide is what we tell friends and customers who want materials without overspending.
Where Fargo–Moorhead finds free boxes
Buy Nothing Fargo / Moorhead groups. Hyper-local giveaway groups are active in the metro. Post an Ask for moving boxes with your side of town (North Fargo, West Fargo, Moorhead, Dilworth) and pickup window. People unpacking after a move are usually glad to clear the garage.
Craigslist Free Stuff (Fargo). Search "moving boxes" or "cardboard boxes." Campus-area and West Fargo listings show up regularly during semester changeovers — respond quickly.
Facebook Marketplace. Filter for free or low-cost box lots. Photos help: look for closed flaps and dry cardboard before you drive across town in January wind.
Liquor stores. Call ahead and ask about clean bottle boxes after delivery days. Locals often mention shops in Fargo and Moorhead that will set sturdy cartons aside when asked. Inspect for intact bottoms before you load them with glassware.
Apartment complexes near campus. NDSU / MSUM move-out weekends leave stacks in hallways and recycling rooms. Ask the office first — don't raid posted recycling without permission.
U-Haul Take-A-Box Leave-A-Box + Box Exchange. Ask at local U-Haul centers whether their reuse stock has anything usable that day. Peer listings on U-Haul's Box Exchange can fill gaps between store visits.
City recycling / transfer — verify. Rules vary by city. Call your Fargo, West Fargo, or Moorhead recycling contact before assuming you can pull cardboard for reuse.
Price check: buying what free sources can't cover
When free boxes run short — or you need matching sizes for books and kitchen — here’s how the big retailers compared on Oct 28, 2026 (America/Denver):
Prices below are national / online list prices captured on Oct 28, 2026 (America/Denver). Retail prices change often and can differ by zip code, store, dealer vs. corporate location, and promotions. Always verify the live price at checkout (or in-store) before publishing or quoting a number to customers. Sources: uhaul.com, homedepot.com, lowes.com snippets, amazon.com — researched Oct 28, 2026 (America/Denver). Lowe’s medium/XL and some HD multi-packs need a live product-page or in-store re-check before you buy. U-Haul dealer stores may price higher than corporate online list.
Free / nearly free from retailers: U-Haul’s Take-A-Box Leave-A-Box bins and online Box Exchange are still active (U-Haul tip article updated May 6, 2026 — ask your local center). Unused new boxes: U-Haul and Home Depot both advertise buy-back / unused returns with receipt.
In a cold-climate move, moisture is the enemy. Don't store free boxes in an unheated garage where they can soften before move day. Double-tape bottoms on any used box carrying books.
Packing tips for FM winters and apartments
- Keep boxes under a comfortable carry weight so one person can still manage them on icy steps.
- For West Fargo or downtown Fargo elevators, confirm building move hours and any COI needs early.
- After you unpack, post the same boxes back to Buy Nothing so the next household gets a turn.
- Mix free mediums for clothes with a few paid smalls for books — that's the combo we see work best on local trucks.
Boxes to skip (even if they're free)
Not every free carton is move-day ready. Pass on:
- Produce boxes that smell like fruit or show moisture stains — they weaken under weight and can attract pests.
- Open-top liquor trays with no bottom flaps — fine for carrying bottles to a car, terrible for stacking in a truck.
- Cartons with grease, soft corners, torn handholds, or anything that lived in a damp garage.
- Banana boxes with large cutouts — small items fall through; reinforce or skip.
- Anything with chemical, paint, or oil residue.
A good used box is clean, dry, closes fully, and still feels solid when you press the sides.
